Rearranging Ribbon Buttons and Auto-scale

July 09, 2012

Along with the latest OneCalendar update that adds page previews and a number of new features, I also updated Onetastic add-in slightly. Onetastic add-in adds 4 buttons to the ribbon Home tab. Now the ribbon in the Office applications is also called "Fluent-UI" due to the fact that it automatically resizes the buttons or other controls on the ribbon based on your window size, so you have access to all the buttons even if your window is pretty small. Add-ins like Onetastic also gets this for free. See the Onetastic buttons below with various window sizes:

Now you might have already seen what is wrong with this. The buttons take more space for a medium sized window, compared to the large window. This is mostly because the labels are a bit long, but still annoying. So I played with them a bit and decided to rearrange them as below:

This both achives a smaller size on the medium window, and gives OneCalendar its deserved place, I think, as it will standout and will stay large even on a small sized window.

Another small change is the ability to Start OneNote after the installation with a button click. The installer requires that you close OneNote to update the add-in. Now once you finish installation, you will get a Start OneNote button as well as the Close button which was alone previously. This will get you back to OneNote as quickly as possible:

Installer

I was expecting this to be a small amount of work, but the installer runs as administrator and you don't want to run OneNote as administrator. Just adding the button to the installer process would cause OneNote to start as administrator, so I had to jump through some hoops to avoid that. Let me know if you encounter any issues with the installer. Also let me know what you think of the changes in the comments section below.

Note that you won't see "Update Available" in the ribbon for this update as it is not important enough to bother most people. However you can download it if you want.

Omar,

I'm having problems with the main Macros group that really have me confused.

I've been getting a bit of macros, to the point where its starting to crowd up my Home tab. I don't like compact mode, so I tried to send the macros into their own tab.

When I did that, however, the macro group was forced into compact mode, with no option to change it out. So now, all of my macros are squeezed in this tiny drop down menu, and I have this huge tab with plenty real estate gone to waste, leaving my only options as 1, having a crowded home tab, but can see all macros at once, or 2, having home tab uncluttered, but all my macros compact and their tab wasted.

Having it in its own tab is a waste of a feature if it has to be in compact mode. How can I fix this?

Omar,

I installed onetastic and it is showing as active in the add-ons but still not in the home ribbon. Do I need to customize ribbon and add it manually? Can you help!
